They’re going back. Or they’re going for the first time. Your children. Your grandchildren. Maybe even your siblings. You’re a little sad, and let’s face it, you might be a little bit happy too! They or you are on the way to the next adventure. But college is expensive enough. Outfitting a dorm shouldn’t break the bank. I know you’ve got to buy the notebooks and the laundry soap and the snacks at full-boat retail, but decor is a whole other story. You can outfit a dorm with thrift and consignment items and save a bundle. Plus, this stylish dorm room won’t look like every other kid on the floor.
Outfit Dorm Room with Storage Options From Thrift and Consignment
There are four areas where you can really score when your try to outfit a dorm room at thrift and consignment. The first and biggest of these is storage. Let’s face it, dorms are traditionally tiny spaces and dorm residents need to make the most of very little space. Check your local thrift and consignment stores for all manner of storage. These shops will have bookcases, baskets, file cabinets, trunks, bins, hooks and hangers. All will be way less than big box stores.
Bedding: A Great Buy on Thrift and Consignment
I would definitely recommend that you buy your sheets and bed pillows new. In fact, at my consignment shop, Consignments Ltd., we don’t even sell used sheets. But comforters, decorative pillows, bolsters and throws are a whole other story. And for these items you can definitely outfit a dorm room from thrift and consignment. Most dorm rooms have XL twin beds. A lot of times you can find comforters and blankets in this size on consignment and at thrift. But you can always go big or go home and opt for a double/full or queen size comforter or blanket. Pillows are abundant on consignment and with a quick wash and dry will cozy up a dorm room bed. And what student wouldn’t like to get cozy studying under a yummy throw, found on consignment or at thrift for a song?
Get Lighting at Thrift and Consignment To Outfit Dorm Room
The glare of the overhead, dormitory light is oh-so-inviting – NOT! Even though it’s probably a safety requirement, these lights are awful. Enter thrift and consignment where you can score a desk lamp, a floor lamp and maybe even something for the bedside. Lighting is oh-so-pricey at retail stores. But outfit dorm light at thrift and consignment and you’re saving a bundle. And being well lit to boot.

Most art for sale in these establishments is already framed, saving you a bundle right off the top. And all of it will be different from any of their neighbors who bought theirs at their local big box, like Target or IKEA. So scour these shops for something that speaks to you or your student and get on with creating the coolest dorm room on the floor.
