Creatively Repurpose Things Others Discard

Furniture at thrift and consignment stores is such a bargain, relative to traditional retail. You can score an entire new living room from items you find there. And you’ll spend so much less than your neighbor did on the same project. Other furniture they sell at thrift and consignment may stump you. It won’t work for your latest redesign, but hold on a second. Maybe that furniture is just waiting to become your latest creative project. You can reimagine thrifted furniture pieces in so many ways. Just consider…

Reimagine Thrifted Furniture For Kids
My daughter, Libby, fell in love with reading almost as soon as she could walk. This love has never died and she reads voraciously as an adult. If I’d had the creativity back when she was small to create a reading nook out of an old TV armoire, like the one above, I doubt she would have ever left it. And she could have stored her hundreds of beloved books in the hutch top reimagined as a kid-sized bookcase. There are endless possibilities when you reimagine thrifted furniture for kids. I, personally, would have played non-stop in the media-unit-turned-cafe or at least have been pretending to cook up a storm on the nightstand-stove. The best part of this re-imagination is that you’re using things that already exist instead of buying a big hunk of plastic.

How About Something For The Grown-Ups?
Recently we had a sale at Consignments Ltd. on some of our old beds. We sold these beds for $10 each, because we’d had them awhile. With a little ingenuity these beds can become many things including the quilt rack and the bench above. Pretty cool, huh?
No one knows what to do with the leftover TV armoires that are no longer in style now that the flat-screen is prevalent. And just like the reading nook for kids that we spoke of earlier, these behemoths, re-imagined, can become coffee stations with very little adaptation. I love the trunk flip above, as well. Turn it on its side, add some shelves: instant bookcase!
So the next time you’re out thrifting keep your creativity hat on and try to reimagine these furniture pieces in new ways. I’m dying to see what you come up with. Email me your finished ideas and I may use them in a future blog. You can reach me at consignmentslimited@gmail.com.
