One thing I say to my clients and customers on repeat is that odd numbers work best when styling and curating your home. No wonder then that the triptych is such a popular styling element in interior design. There are so many uses for this art form that I thought it would be worth a chat…

What Exactly Is A Triptych

A triptych is an art form that is made up of three panels which are intended to be displayed together. The word triptych comes from a Greek word meaning three-fold. A triptych can be three related subjects or one continuous picture created over three panels. The first triptychs, like the one above, were often religious in nature and displayed in churches. Today triptychs are still a very popular art form and can be found in a myriad of medium including photography, watercolor, acrylic and process print (Giclee).

Great Spots For a Triptych In Interior Design: Over A Couch or Bed

The walls over a bed or over a couch can be two of the hardest places to style in a house. The expanse is large and often doesn’t lend itself to one, average sized piece of art. But, ah… the triptych isn’t just your average bear. Three interlocking panels or three, separately framed, cohesive images make these spaces sparkle. Choose calming, restful triptychs in the bedroom and perhaps dimensional or bold images over your couch. And if you’re considering a triptych for one of these spaces, don’t forget to check you local consignment or thrift store, like Consignments Ltd. These shops are great places to score art, including triptychs.

Large Spaces Are Also Well-Served With Triptychs

Got a big, wide hall? Get a triptych. A massive foyer? A triptych. Even large, outdoor spaces, like the back of the garage can be turned into WOW with a triptych. Their sheer size gives large spaces presence and at the same time makes them feel less overwhelming and more in scale. Think about it. Galleries use this trick all the time. And it works.

I hope you’ll consider the power of three the next time you’re stuck trying to design a space in your home. And if you’re still up for odd numbers, try these topics: Tips For Accessorizing Your Surfaces and How To Decorate With Pillows.

And Now For A Little Music Before We Go…

Have a lovely day, my friends. Marianne
