Tiffany’s. Yup. The iconic brand with the oh-so-wonderful blue box, that sets a person’s heart aflutter is mixing medals. Of course their mixing is stunning jewelry. And it’s the oh-so-expensive kind. But they have me thinking. Today at the store I sold a silver, Mercury glass candlestick and a gold Mercury glass vase to the same customer. She told me that she planned to use them together, on her mantel. But she asked me, “Now can I use both of these together?” Her inquiry begged the question and brought me happily back to Tiffany’s: Can you or should you mix silver and gold in home decor? Here’s the skinny on how to…

Pick a Dominant Color and An Accent Color To Mix Silver and Gold in Home Decor

A great way to mix gold and silver is to let one of the two tones be the star or dominant color whilst the other serves as an accent. What I mean by this is that you use lots of silver throughout the room, with one bold gold piece as the accent. Create a room with nickel lamps and brushed silver frames with one, gorgeously gold-framed oil painting over the mantel. Or perhaps in your primary bath it’s brass lighting and faucets but a lucius silver mirror over the vanity.

Tie The Finishes Together: It’s The Best Way To Mix Silver and Gold in Home Decor

According to the luxe brand, Rowen Homes, mixing is ok if you create cohesion another way. “By using the finishes to tie your mixed metals together, you’re still being consistent in your space and creating a coherent look.” So use brushed metals together like brushed nickel and brushed brass. Or use polished metals together (like the case of my customer) shiny, gold Mercury glass with another shiny metal in silver. It’s the finish that makes the mixing work.

Don’t Cluster Your Mixed Metals or Your Mixing Won’t Work

If you sprinkle your various metals throughout the room rather than clustering them together mixing metals can work. This sprinkling will make the mix of metals more impactful. It will seem like an intended design aesthetic rather than an unplanned mix-up. So mix away, my friends. After all, it’s your home. What makes you happy works, regardless of the “rules.”

Insider Tip: If you’re looking for metallics, from brass candlesticks to nickel light fixtures, check out your local thrift or consignment shop, like Consignments Ltd. They are a great resources for all types of metallic decor items.
