4 Basic Reasons You Should Care About The Design of The Spaces You Occupy

Design your space

OK, full disclosure, I am in love… with interior design. I have owned a home consignment store for more than 17 years and I have been designing interiors for friends and private clients for even longer. So if you are looking for someone to talk you out of caring about your spaces…for just throwing the furniture up against the walls and calling it a day… please… look somewhere else. If you want, however, to know why interior design of your spaces really matters… keep reading.

1. Interior Design Improves Your of Use of Space

Whether you hire an interior design professional to help you with your space, or you learn a lot and design it yourself, it doesn’t matter. What matters is good design. Why? Because good design improves the use of your space. Designers are skilled at asking questions, prior to design, to ascertain how you live and how you use your space. There is a very famous quote about design that “…form follows function,” attributed to  architect Louis H. Sullivan and what that means with respect to interior design is that what your space ultimately looks like should be driven by how you live. Good interior design will eliminate the unnecessary and will make you space work for you, instead of the other way around. Good interior design…. it’s all about ease of use.

2. Interior Design Creates Personal Comfort

Related to number one, good interior design will make you live more comfortably. A lamp well placed near the couch, where you sit and work from home, lights your work and eases your eyes. A chair, placed by the window over-looking your backyard, makes your reading nook warmer and more inviting. Your bed turned away from the street keeps the neighbor’s motion light from disrupting your sleep. Good interior design… it’s all about comfort.

color is important to interior design
The Color Sets The Mood

3. Interior Design Enhances Your Mood

I don’t want to sound like a broken record here, but color really matters. I have talked about it with you on fashion topics as well as interior design ideas. Well, one thing that shines through all of my chatter on color is that color can change how we feel. If you choose good colors for your inferiors, you can actually improve how you feel when you are in those spaces. Chose shades of yellow for energy and creativity, silver tones for glamour and colors in the red zone to evoke passion and drama. Good color choices in interior design… it’s all about setting the mood. For more on color topics check out my other blogs: Hot Color For 2022: Mustard Yellow and Color Scheme Decorating.

4. Interior Design Expresses Your Personality

Even though this is the last point, it is, in my humble opinion, one of the most important. Good interior design is a very concrete way to express your personality. Period. The things you chose, or the things you and your designer chose together, should be things that speak to you… things that you love. This will not only make you happier and literally and figuratively more “at home” in your space, but it will let everyone who spends time in your space know a little bit more about you. Chose prints by the great Impressionists and maybe you say something about your romantic side. Chose a chrome and glass coffee table and you say something about your love of order and your modernistic flair. Your interiors say something about who you are and the you that you want the world to see. Good interior design… it’s all about personality.

Another Reason To Care About Interior Design?

Good interior design not only helps you live well in your spaces, but it can seriously help your resale value if you ever decide to sell – so it’s worth caring about no matter how you slice it. And that, my friends, is why interior design matters…

And Now For a Little Music Before We Go…
