When they were young, my kids would say that decorating the house for Christmas before Thanksgiving “violated the Prime Directive,” and is completely not allowed. At my retail, consignment store, we stick with this rule to this day. But guess what, folks, Turkey Day has passed and we are in the prime and acceptable decorating season. And today, I want to talk about one of the coolest trends I’ve noticed in seasonal decorating – a creative and attractive way to thrift your Christmas decor with vintage containers.

Containers, Containers Everywhere

Consignment and thrift stores, like Consignments Ltd., are usually loaded with all types of containers that you can thrift to create holiday decor. For example, an old, wooden, soda crate makes a great jumping off point. Use it for greens, pine cones and maybe some battery powered lights? It’s a great centerpiece on your kitchen table. Or it’s a focal point for the console table in the hall? Score a vintage, metal, tool box and add some bottle brush trees from the Dollar Tree store and a candle or two and you’ve got a unique look for a small investment.

Let Your Creativity Flow When You Thrift Your Christmas Decor

Thrift and consignment stores are rife with containers. Consider any and all of the containers in the following list.

  • Old Wooden Trays (with candles and greens)
  • Milk Glass Compotes (full of vintage ornaments)
  • Wooden Crates (for Christmas cards past and present)
  • Metal Egg Baskets (for your collection of vintage Santa’s)
  • Cylindrical Glass Candle Holders (loaded with old Christmas lights)

Almost any container you can thrift can lend itself to some type of Christmas decor. Have fun, my friends! And if you’re hungry for more on the topic of Christmas, check out me previous blogs: The Christmas Ornament Story and Vintage Christmas Decorations: The Hunt Is On.

And Now For A Little Music Before We Go…

Have a lovely day, my friends. Marianne
