I move furniture pretty much on the daily because of what I do for a living. A home consignment store is like that quote about a man never stepping in the same river twice. The store is different every day based on what sells and what comes in. My staff and I are constantly rearranging to make things fit and to make a more pleasant customer experience. Just like moving furniture benefits my store, moving your own furniture around occasionally can benefit you in a myriad of ways. Just consider…
Moving Furniture Around Occasionally Changes Your Outlook – Literally.
I recently re-oriented my office at the store. It was cathartic! I turned my desk a mere 90 degrees. My view is completely different and so is my outlook. I originally had my desk positioned to look directly out my office’s interior window, which was great, albeit a bit distracting. Now the window is to my right, so I can turn from it when I need to concentrate. To my left, the wall that was at my back is now begging for a piece of art. And you know how I hate shopping for decor, LOL. Sometimes a good overhaul is good for your brain and your attitude.
You can’t always do the complete re-do like I did in my office the other day, but even rearranging a few of the smaller pieces in a room can have this change-of-outlook effect. If you change the position of your couch, perhaps you get a different view of your fireplace that makes you smile. Re-orient the bed in your primary and you may get better sleep turning away form the neighbor’s porch light. Move the TV in the den and you might just improve your traffic flow through the room. As with all things interior design, just use your imagination (and, of course your furniture sliders). Just remember where you put everything when you walk through in the dark!
Rearranging The Furniture Makes You Clean Things You Rarely Do
When I was re-doing my office I took everything out into the hall except the desk, which I wiped down. I vacuumed. I dusted. And then I wiped down the base boards and OMG I was mortified at the dirt on those babies. I vacuum, dust and wipe down the desk regularly, but those baseboards, man, they had not seen a damp cloth is an embarrassing amount of time. Sometimes this rearranging helps you maintain your home and furnishings too. When Bruce and I rearranged our living room before his Mom came for a visit, we discovered that the back of one of the leather couches, which had a console table behind it, was actually getting mold spots on it from lack of air circulation. Bruce couldn’t clean that puppy fast enough. The couches, which we love, were saved from damage because we had rearranged the furniture.
Insider Tip: Rearranging your furniture also helps to spread the wear and tear on your carpeting, helping carpets to last longer.
It Makes You Purge the Outdated And The Rarely Used
I got rid of so much paper from my office the other day that I over-heated the shredder, not once but three times. But boy-oh-boy did it feel good getting rid of all those old bank statements and credit card receipts! When moving furniture around occasionally at home I always find items that have run their course or look too tired to continue in the room or in my home. These items generally go to my consignment store or to donation. And it feels good to be lighter or, in some instances give myself something new to search for.
Insider Tip: When you move furniture around occasionally and you purge decor and furniture, make sure to bring it to your local consignment shop, like Consignments Ltd. And Now For Some Music Before We Go…
Have fun rearranging, my friends. Marianne
