I am in the throws of packing to move, as I write this to you my friends. Bruce and I are moving a whopping four and a half miles up the road. The thing about moving is, that it really doesn’t matter if you’re moving four miles or four hundred miles, you’ve got to take all your stuff with you. It can be a stressful time (more about that in another blog), but some things can make it a little less so. So I’m sharing some best moving tips with you today. Even if moving isn’t on your horizon I hope you’ll enjoy the topic…

Best Moving Tips: Make Your Consignment Appointments Early

If you are moving, there will undoubtedly be things that you are not taking with you. If you lighten your load before that expensive moving truck pulls up, you will save a bunch on your moving bill. And maybe you’ll have some extra cash to buy what you do need at the new place? So as soon as you have a signed purchase and sale or lease, contact your local consignment store, like Consignments Ltd. Heck, reach out when you begin to think of moving to get an idea about their policies and schedule. You won’t regret it.

Best Moving Tips: You Can Never Have Enough Boxes

My brother-in-law, Pat, is an author and a college professor. He frequently contributes articles, on a multitude of subjects, to various publications. In one such article, long ago, he wrote about his experience, building his own house (by hand). This comes to mind now, because one of the biggest pieces of advice he gave to folks contemplating this task was, “order more checks!” If you’ve ever built a house you get what he means: there’s always another expense coming down the line. Moving is the same. There’s always a need for more boxes. Just when you think you’re done, you remember the stuff under the kitchen sink and all those things squirreled into the crawl space. Yikes! Hair on fire need for more boxes.

So order more than you think. You usually can return purchased boxes if the package is unopened. We ordered Boxes From Amazon (they are returnable). And if you’re getting recycled boxes from a local business you can, at a minimum, recycle them anew.

wrapping paper to move

Get Lots of Paper and Bubble Wrap

I can’t actually believe how much wrapping paper we are going through packing our things. I also can’t believe how much stuff we have, but that too is a story for another day. If you have friends that still get the newspaper, have them start saving it for you. We ordered Plain Wrapping Paper because I do NOT want to wash everything again when we unpack. You can get Bubble Wrap in big rolls for the most fragile stuff. Again, these are both returnable if unopened, so don’t be afraid to get more than you think you’ll need.

Moving Totes

Get The Totes: The Big Surprise Is How Helpful They Are

The last time I moved, I don’t think these Moving Totes were a thing, but I am super glad they are now! Perfect for pillows, bulky sweaters, sheets, towels, blankets, ski-wear, you name it. I ordered two sets for this move and I’m contemplating ordering a third set. They are light-weight, have zippers and handles and a place for your labels.

And on that note:

Insider Tip: Make sure you buy or make plenty of labels for your items and boxes. For boxes, label at least two sides. Include where the box or item goes (the den, the primary, etc.) and a quick list of contents (like books, sheets, etc.). You will be so happy when you’re searching for that needed thing on the first day you’re there!

I’ll check in on the other side of the move and let you know how it went?

And Now For A Little Music Before We Go…

Have a great day, my friends. Marianne
