From Elle Decor to ApartmentTherapy.com, from Insider.com to Forbes, everyone has an opinion about what is hot and what is not in furniture and decor this year. While I don’t agree with some of them, like Elle Decor’s assessment that nautical is out, I do see some trends worth noting. Furniture and decor that is out of style for 2023 includes:
1. Fast Furniture is Out Of Style in 2023
“While it’s a great way to save money, fast furniture doesn’t last and creates unnecessary waste, negatively impacting the environment. Because sustainability has become a priority for many, people are gravitating away from cheap furniture in favor of vintage or used pieces. ” This sentiment, according to a recent Forbes article, is one I am very hopeful about. When you consider that, according to the Unite States Environmental Protection Agency, more than 12 million tons of furniture ends up in U.S. landfills each year it makes me happy that fast furniture is out of style in 2023.
2. Bulky Furniture is Out of Style in 2023
Since the COVID onslaught, people are spending more time than ever in their homes – living AND working. By choice or necessity, many of us have created multi-purpose rooms. Bulky furniture (like big, media consoles, huge coffee tables and large nightstands) works against this dual-functionality. Bulky furniture is out of style in 2023. Big night stands are being replaced by small desks. They can hold your reading lamp for bed, but can also be a quiet Zoom space for you next meeting. Large coffee tables are being exchanged for smaller, more-movable versions. This allows them to be pushed aside so yoga can happen in the spot in front of the couch. Media consoles are being skinned by the ever-shrinking size of our televisions. They are also going away as people decentralize TV in these multi-purpose rooms.

3. Say Goodbye to Word Art, Perhaps?
I could tell you quite awhile ago that this trend was on the way out due to the sheer volume of “word art” that’s been coming into Consignments Ltd. This trend is probably meeting its fate due to its overuse in farmhouse-styled homes. I personally hope it hasn’t gone all the way out, however. A few well-chosen words can make a home more welcoming. I guess we will see on this one.
4. White and Gray Decor is Out of Style in 2023
For so many years in a row, gray has been the “It” color. It goes with a multitude of design esthetics and it’s super easy to match. Every flip house ever is done on a gray and white palette to appeal to the broadest number of people. Well, apparently, we have all had enough of gray and white. You could tell when two of the colors of the year were raspberry blush and resend point (shades of red and pink respectively). Maybe it’s due to the increased amount of time that we are spending in our homes? Maybe it’s just over-saturation (pun definitely intended)? Either way, it’s great to see color return. Bye-bye gray and white. You’re decor that is out of style in 2023.
