OK, people, so today’s the day. Love it or hate it, it’s Valentine’s Day. Some say it’s a day promoted by the folks at Hallmark and Whitman Candies and they ignore it altogether. For those of you who still believe, however, here are a few, no-cost, last-minute ideas to show your love:

1. Clean Their Car

I am embarrassed to say that I practically live in my car and yet I never really take the time to clean it. It’s a bad habbit or a dirty little secret (literally), because I am a relatively clean and organized person. I think there are a lot of us out there like this. So, if this sounds like the person you love, how about hauling the vacuum cleaner out to the garage this morning, with the Windex and some paper towels (hell, if it’s warm enough you can even get out the hose) . Give their car a scrub and give them a true gift; all it will cost you is a little elbow grease and your love is bound to adore you for it.

2. Make Them a Playlist

Seems like everyone belongs to one music streaming service or another these days (Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, iHeart Radio). And if you don’t, that’s ok too because anyone can download songs from YouTube for free. So think about your loved one, and hurry up, because they’ll be up soon, and pull together a few songs that you can play for them today. It’s bound to make them smile.

3. Take a Hike…Or a Walk… with Your Love

Weather permitting today, why not get outside and take a walk or a hike with your love. It’s free. It’s fresh air. It’s a great time for conversation and a little hand-holding. A perfect Valentine’s Day gift.

4. Make Them Breakfast In Bed

OK, so you’ve got to eat, and if you haven’t yet today, what better day than Valentine’s Day to make your sweetheart breakfast in bed? It doesn’t have to be Eggs Benedict or Espresso Waffles, simple yogurt and fresh fruit will do. It’s the act of fixing it for the other person and bringing it to them that is the real gift. Start with coffee or tea or their favorite beverage (champagne, anyone?) and bring them a magazine or their iPad to lounge over whilst you prepare your masterpiece. Add a fresh flower in a vase and they will remember this Valentine’s Day for a long time.

5. Write Them a Love Letter

If you are ever going the wear your heart on your sleeve, today is the day. Get out an old fashioned piece of paper and that funny little thing called a pen, and write a few lines, or an epic poem if you’re up for that, to your Valentine. Tell them what you love about them, why you’re proud of them, the way they make you feel. You know what they say, that no one, on their deathbed, ever wishes for more time at the office. My Dad, when he was leaving us, asked me, “Baby Girl, did I tell her enough? Do you think I told her enough?” He meant my Mom, and he had, he more than had. In that, he was one of the lucky ones, but more so, my Mom was. So tell them. Write it down. Don’t be scared or embarrassed. It’s the right day for it, because today … it’s love, love, love.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
