Recently, I came across two, beautiful, cloisonne lamps. But they lacked shades. No problem, I figured. I’ll just add new ones. There are a plethora of shades online to chose from. The issue, however, is what size to order. Then I came across this neat little graphic below online and presto! So if you’re struggling with how to pick the right size lampshade for one of yours, keep reading.

For the mathematically challenged, I’m sorry for what I’m about to say. To pick the right size lampshade you have to do some math. Whether it’s bell-shaped, drum- style, square, oval or empire, shade size follows this rule:
Lampshade Height = Lamp Base Height Divided by Two
Lampshade Base Width = Two Times the Width of Lamp Base
In my cloisonne example, the lamp bases are 18″ tall, so the shades need to be 9″ in height. The base of the lamp is 8″ across at the bottom, so the shade base needs to be 16″ across at the bottom. Empire and bell-shaped shades, and even drum shades sometimes, are proportionately tapered, so you only need to worry about the bottom measurement to get it right. That’s it! Easy, right? You don’t even need a calculator. Happy shade shopping, dear friends.

Insider Tip: Consignment and thrift stores, like Consignments Ltd., are often a fantastic places to score lampshades at great prices.
