“Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink, ” was famously penned by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in his epic Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The man in the poem is surrounded by glorious water (the sea) , but can not benefit from any of it due to its salinity. We too are surrounded by water, but, unlike Coleridge’s sailor, we can take advantage of its goodness. And that’s because there are so many health benefits to drinking more water. Just consider…

Health Benefits of Drinking More Water: It Helps To Manage Blood Sugar

I’m a Type 1 (T1D) or juvenile diabetic. This means that my body doesn’t work like non-diabetics. I can not process food for energy properly without taking insulin. You wouldn’t think that this has anything to do with drinking more water, but boy have I got news for you. Water is not only critical to life, but it’s critical for managing blood sugar, and not just with diabetics (both Type 1 and Type 2) but with everyone. According to Healthline.com, ” Drinking enough water could help you keep your blood sugar levels within healthy ranges. In addition to preventing dehydration, it helps your kidneys flush out excess sugar…” Pretty cool, huh?

More Water Can Mean Better Skin

Sleep, sunblock and water are the three keys to great skin. And water is chief among them. According to The Maryland Institute For Plastic Surgery, drinking water has “10 amazing skin benefits,” including: improving skin tone, preventing premature aging, promoting faster healing and preventing acne. Makes you thirsty just reading that, doesn’t it?

Health Benefits of Drinking More Water: Water Promotes Better Digestion

Did you know that water is key to digesting your food? Without enough water your body will not absorb all the nutrients from the food you eat. Water also helps to move food along your digestive track. And water is essential in helping your body get rid of the things it doesn’t need, if you get my drift?

Water Lubricates Your Joints

At Consignments Ltd., my brick and mortar store, we move a lot of furniture every day. This can make for some very achy joints on the daily. But, more water can help to dissipate these aches and pain by lubricating your joints and helping them to move better. It works for us and it can work for you too.

It Helps To Start a Routine

If you find it challenging to get enough water, get yourself a nice, 24 oz. water bottle. I like the ZuLu Water Bottle on Amazon, because the bottom unscrews and makes it super easy to clean, even on vacation. Fill the bottle before leaving your house and vow to drink it all before you get where you’re going. Of course, this will not help if your setting out on a cross-country trip, but the ride to work or school will do. Then fill it again for the ride home. You will know that you’ve had at least 48 oz of water per day that way. It’s not enough, but it’s a start. By-the-way, The Mayo Clinic recommends “about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women.” You can count all decaffeinated, sugar-free drinks in that total. Phew! So drink more water, you’ll be glad you did.

A Word of Caution: As my dear friend, Dee, reminded me, you can sometimes overdo even water. So, as with all things, moderation is best.

Hope you have a lovely and well-hydrated day, my friends. Marianne
