In Sunday’s blog we talked about some of the best buys that can be found in consignment shops. I shared with you that things like china, art, furniture and lighting are fantastic things to consider buying on consignment. Today I’m getting a little more personal and talking about clothing and accessories that are truly best buys in consignment shops. Next Sunday we will finish up this three part series. For today, though, let’s talk consignment best buys – fashion.
Costume Jewelry – A Consignment Best Buy
Who doesn’t like a new piece of bling now and then? Or need that necklace to match your dress for that wedding? Or a different pair of earrings for New Year’s Eve? Consignment shops offer costume jewelry at HUGE discounts off retail, and because they offer jewelry from all different time periods, you will see unique pieces that you aren’t seeing in every Old Navy from here to Cleveland. Check out the inventory the next time you’re in a consignment shop.. you’re going to be pleasantly surprised.
Coats and Furs (Real and Faux) – A Consignemnt Best Buy
In my neck of the woods we wear our winter coats for about 6 months of the year. It’s lovely for that first snow, but by April I sure am sick of the darn thing. Spending a decent amount of cash on a coat, therefor, seems fairly warranted. If you’re like me, you don’t like to wear the same coat every day for 6 months. You want to have more than one. But who wants to make that kind of investment multiple times? Enter the consignment store, where coats of all types are a consignment best buy. They are available at a tiny percent of original retail. No amount of discounts, coupons and loyalty points is going to make a $600 leather jacket $100 in a standard department store. But those are the kind of buys you can find in consignment shops. Selection is not limited to vintage, but if that’s your thing you can usually find them there. Furs, both real (no judgement here) and faux, are also a great buy. You’re going to want to check them out…
Handbags – A Consignment Best Buy
Name-brand handbags can be the score of the century at consignment shops. High-end bags are offered by most consignment stores at 50% or less of retail, so they definitely a consignment best buy. You can find brands from Celine to Gucci, Coach to Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton to Chanel, you name it. Consignment shops can be the best place to buy bags.
A word of caution on bags however. Make sure you are dealing with a reputable shop that stands behind the authenticity of their bags and does not, and I repeat, does not sell fake bags. Fake designer bags represents copyright infringement which is illegal. These fake bags have been found to be made under deplorable and unfair labor conditions, as well as associated with money laundering and organized crime. Good shop owners know their stuff when it comes to spotting fakes – and they just don’t sell them – EVER. I figure that if a shop tries to pass these fakes off as the real-deal, what else are they lying to me about? So make sure you’re confident in the brands being sold and you can get a great bag for a great deal.
A Final Thought…
