They’re going back! For those of you parents or grandparents who feel like the kids just started summer break, think again. Four weeks from now you will be scrambling to get them and yourself ready. One of the best things you can do, in the meantime, is create a back-to-school home office or a dedicated homework space in your home. It will help with organization, focus and even may help with their grades. But don’t worry, you don’t have to visit your local loan officer to get this done because you can thrift your back-to-school home office for a very small investment. Here’s how…

But First…Where Do I Put A Back-to-School Home Office?

Unfortunately, your house is not like your garden. It will not grow with a little water and fertilizer. And no, you don’t need to call the contractor and add an addition for that back-to-school home office.

You can carve out a dedicated space in a few creative ways. If you have a guest room, this one is easy. Add a desk and chair and maybe a bookcase and you’re good to go.

No guest room? No problem. You can create a workspace in a seldom-used closet. Take the doors off first, unless you really don’t like your kids. Build a writing surface or add a small table. Lighting is easy and does not require an electrician. Simply add a cordless, rechargeable desk lamp.

Another great workspace is behind the couch in the living or family room. Convert that sofa table into study space/desk and add a chair. When not in use, stow the chair. Baskets underneath can store all the study necessities.

So Where Does Thrift Come In?

Most of the furniture, lighting and organizational items that I mentioned above are readily available at thrift and consignment shops, like Consignments Ltd. Look for desks and tables that can serve as desks. Bookcases go quickly, but if you need one for your back-to-school home office, grab them when you see them, even if they need a coat of paint. And these shops are usually loaded with baskets for organizing and lamps for lighting up your life or at least your desk.
