A lot of people will be having sleepover guests in the next few weeks. If you’re lucky enough to have a spare room for your guests they should be pretty happy to have a private place to rest their heads. But maybe you’re thinking about something a little more inviting? One of the ways to up your game when it comes to guest space is to create a “themed guest room” for them to use. I’m not talking about a hit-you-over-the-head theme, like a Frozen-themed bedroom with character sheets and an animated snowman named Olaf. Unless you have a seven year old granddaughter, and then all bets are off on that one. What I’m talking about is the subtly themed guest room that wraps your guest in cozy, connected decor that feels as if they’re staying at The Ritz. Just consider…

A Themed Guest Room Based on A Locale
I live a stone’s throw from the ocean, so a coastal-themed guest room feels like an easy A. If you don’t live by the sea, however, a coastal-theme might feel ever-so-indulgent to your guests. You can bring in coastal colors, like blue, turquoise and tan. Choose decor with nautical stripes and roping. Heck, you can even use a starfish nightlight. The same can be done with a lake or mountain feel. Use birch-wrapped lamp bases, cozy buffalo plaid comforters and a moose or a bear or two for good measure. The art you choose can also help to unite the theme. Sailboats and beach images for the coastal work well. Mountain streams and canoe prints for the lake or mountain room.
Another way to go with this idea is to theme a guest room around your travels, be it worldwide or a particular country or state. I have a guest room in my home where I’ve curated all my French pieces (art, furniture and fabrics). It’s subtle but it has a luxurious feel as a collection.

Themed Guest Rooms Based on a Category or a Collection
My friend is an avid birder. For her, a guest room featuring Audubon prints would be a perfect getaway. For my Christmas-loving Auntie, a room dedicated to Santa would be just the ticket. A sports memorabilia collection can make a great jumping off point for a themed guest room. Anything you love or collect can be the start for a category-themed room. And besides, it gives you a way and a place to highlight your collection or loved object or topic.

A Themed Guest Room Based on An Activity
Line your guest room walls with bookshelves full of novels and your visitors get to spend their nights sleeping in a library. If the guest room is exceptionally sunny, perhaps they end up feeling like they’re sleeping in a greenhouse, because all your orchids and cacti reside there. Create a Bourbon room, but make it guest ready with a Chesterfield, sleeper sofa. An activity-based theme also allows the room to serve a dual purpose for you, when it’s not being used for guests.
Insider Tip: Thinking about a themed guest room, but unsure where to start? Thrift and Consignment stores, like Consignments Ltd., provide great inspiration, as well as on-theme products from Audubon prints to rustic bedding.
