I think that certain times of the year are triggers for particular purchases and activities. In January, for example, bed linens tend to be more deeply discounted. It’s a great time to buy sheets. At daylight savings time, you change the batteries in your smoke detectors. Safety first, dear ones! My friend, Holly, recently shared a blog with me from Epicurious that suggests that the New Year should be associated with an annual changing out of your kitchen cutting boards. Because old cutting boards can harbor germs and dull your knives, I think that this is a great idea. So if you’re thinking, indeed, that this time of year is a good time for buying replacements, just consider these great cutting boards.

Great Plastic Cutting Boards

I really like the OXO Plastic Cutting Board Set. It has 4.6 stars on Amazon and the price for a two pack (2 sizes) is only $23.99. These plastic boards are dishwasher safe and have drip-catchers for extra juices. You will love the non-slip feet on these reversible boards, if you have stone counter tops. Because they keep the boards steadily in place. Only need one? OXO also makes an Everyday Cutting Board for just $18.95. Changing to these boards annually is definitely worth it. You will reduce your exposure to germs and save wear-and tear on your knives.

Great Wooden Cutting Boards

When it comes to wooden boards, Keehee’s Bamboo Wood Cutting Board Set is a great choice for cutting boards. This set of three is made of sustainable material (bamboo) and has cross-lamination construction to limit warping and extend use. Like the plastic ones above, these boards have built-in juice grooves. I like the handles that make them easy to hold on to. Additionally, the handles make them easy to hang to store. As an added bonus, ninety percent of reviews on Amazon are 4 stars and above.

Insider Tip: You should NEVER, and I mean NEVER, buy a cutting board from a thrift or consignment shop, like Consignments Ltd., unless it is brand new in the package or has clearly not been used. Bacteria hangs out in cut marks of a used board. It is just not worth the risk!
