Much to the chagrin of some of my consignors, I turn away furniture pieces every week. They just won’t sell in my store. It’s not that I don’t like these pieces. Unfortunately, it’s that the pieces have just not been cared for. What a shame, because there are so many easy ways to protect your furniture.

Glass Tops Are One of The Easy Ways to Protect Your Furniture

“I got a guy.” Well, actually, I got a girl. A glass girl that is, and she’s amazing (link below). Her glass company is professional and reliable and she definitely goes the extra mile. She helps me with one of the easy ways that I protect my furniture: glass tops for my dressers and night stands. Glass tops are a relative bargain when you consider the cost of furniture. For example, an average-size nightstand will cost you about $40 in glass. A long dresser may cost you $100. The glass prevents all kinds of disasters from befalling your furniture. Spills. Water rings. Burns. They just won’t happen with glass tops. You can get a glass gal too. It’s an easy way to protect your furniture.

My Glass Girl: Westerly Glass Company, Westerly, RI. (401) 596-4733.

Coasters Are Another of The Easy Ways To Protect Your Furniture

My kids will tell you, I’m a nut for coasters. Every coffee table I’ve ever had in my home has had a container with coasters so people can easily access them. Coasters protect your furniture by preventing moisture and heat from drinks and food from getting on your surfaces. They take up almost no space to store and they are so worth it.

Insider Tip: Consignment shops, like Consignment Ltd., are great places to find inexpensive yet attractive coasters to protect your furniture.

Placemats Can Help Your Furniture Too

Placemats can really up your tablesetting game, but they also serve a completely different function. They are furniture protectors. Who knew, right? And placemats do what coasters do. They keep moisture and heat off your surfaces and therefor limit damage to them. And they’re pretty too. Like coasters, placemats are a great buy at thrift and consignment shops.

Trays Are One of My Favorite Ways To Protect Your Furniture

I can go on and on about trays. They are the workhorse of interior deisgn (see my previous blog: Using Trays in Interior Design). Trays not only gather items together to make the design of your surfaces shine, but they prevent all kinds of damage to your furniture. Perfume spills and water rings don’t have a chance when there’s a tray on the surface of your furniture.

And Now For A LittleMusic Before We Go…

Have a lovely, spill-free day, my friends. Marianne
