Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who’s the fairest of them all? Well it’s you if you’re scoring your mirrors at thrift and consignment. Thrift is the absolute best place to buy a mirror. I’ve blogged on this topic before (link to that one is below) because mirrors are soooo expensive if you buy them in regular retail stores. Today I’d like to talk about some rather cool ideas, besides gazing at yourself in one hung on the wall, for those great mirrors you’re finding…

Idea For Thrift Mirrors: Make a Sign

A beautiful mirror makes a beautiful sign. Perhaps you’re welcoming your guests to a wedding or a baby shower? Or directing them to a location within the party, like signing the guest book or finding the bar? You can pop your thrifted mirror on an easel and then use markers that write on glass or use adhesive letters to customize your message. It’s so much more elegant than a hand-written or pre-printed sign.

Idea For Thrift Mirrors: Make a Tray

At Consignments Ltd. we use this little trick all the time. Take a small, or not-so-small mirror and place it in the middle of a dining or coffee table. Then just use it as you’d use a tray. For a coffee table you can trick it out with some books, a plant, an interesting art object. You know, the stuff that speaks to you. The mirrored surface will add additional light in your room. And speaking of light, a mirror in the center of your dining table, covered in candles, does double duty in creating ambiance.

Or Buy A Bunch and Make A Collage

You can grab a bunch of old hand mirrors and make a really great focal wall. Turn them mirror side out in a bathroom for extra light and reflections. Turn the around to show off their interesting backs in a bedroom. You can do the same with wall hanging mirrors. Hang mirrors with all similar tone frames for a elegant installation. Or hang a disparate assortment for a jolt of personality.
