In my book, it’s never too early to start planning for Christmas. I know, it’s only July, but stick with me on this one. It’s going to save you time and money. Upstairs, in my new home office, I have a cupboard. In the cupboard are gifts that I have already scored for Christmas this year. And most of them I found secondhand. You can do this too. Put a box under your bed. Make space in a closet. It will be worth it. And these gifts are not just for Christmas. You can find gifts for birthdays, showers, host/hostess, etc. Gift ideas abound at thrift and consignment stores. Surprised? Well, just consider…

New In The Box Items Are Among the Best Gift Ideas at Thrift and Consignment
The other day I scored a brand-new, with the tags, Lilly Pulitzer cocktail napkin dispenser (with a pack of her napkins). I love it! I nabbed it not even knowing who I would give it to or for what occassion, but it will be someone on my list at some point. It will make a lovely hostess gift with a bottle of wine or a stocking stuffer for one of the “girls.” It cost me $6. Retail price is $32. Score! A couple of months ago, at my own shop, Consignments Ltd., I nabbed a pair of icing squeeze bottles. My daughter, who loves to bake, will be getting them in her stocking this year. If you see her, please don’t tell her.

You Can’t Go Wrong with Frames For Gifts From Thrift and Consignment
Every time that I see a good looking frame on consignment or thrift, I grab it. Photos I’ve taken over the course of the year make great gifts for all occassions. My Mom and mother-in-law will love pictures of the grandchildren. My daughter-in-law will love the picture I took of my son when I was visiting him. You get the idea.

Art Makes a Great Gift From Thrift and Consignment
For the bird-lovers in my life, I always look for framed Audubon prints. For my NYC buddies, maybe a New Yorker cover. Katie loves the coastal theme. You can find art for almost anyone and almost every gift-giving situation at thrift and consignment stores. I found a vintage map of Cleveland for my brother-in-law. It was $15! Now that’s a great deal and a great gift.

Vintage Jewelry Makes a Wonderful Present
My friend Holly’s daughters are college kids, and they’re cool. They change their styles faster than the lights change on Broadway. They are always styling new jewelry, even in their hair! So vintage jewelry is a great gift score for them. It’s a great gift for a lot of people. And it won’t look like everything out there in the regular retail stores.
So consider thrift and consignment stores the next time you need a gift. Or better yet, start a stash. For some realted reads, check out some of my previous blogs, like: Gift Wrap Storage Solutions and Creative Gift Wrapping Ideas For The Holidays.
