Apparently I have a “wellness room” and I didn’t even know it. Setting up my first-ever, personal home office qualifies as a wellness room because I retreat there to do something I really love: crafting. Crafting and creating takes me out of the grind and sets my head back on straight. Well, as straight as is possible for me. I come out of my crafting space often covered in hot glue, and sometimes not at all that happy with my results, but almost always more relaxed and right with the world. This is one of the many reasons that people are creating wellness rooms and spaces in their homes. Other reasons include…

Wellness Rooms and Spaces: Great Places For Quiet Contemplation
Decorators and designers are in demand all over the country from clients who want to create rooms for quiet pursuits like meditation, yoga and Zen gardening. These wellness rooms are all about getting away from the noise and distraction that surrounds us. As one designer put it, in these rooms the only sounds are made by you. It’s your breath, your chant, your sun salutation. Consequently, these types of wellness rooms are sparse. They contain just a pieces. There are a few dimable lights, perhaps a yoga mat or comfortable chair and sometimes even noise cancelling machines. Create one of these and you truly have a place to get away from it all. It’s your own, personal spa.

Or Places To Celebrate Creative Pusuits
Much like my new office/crafting room, many wellness rooms are made for creating. Whether it’s music or sewing, woodworkikng or crafting, painting or drawing, these rooms are set up for the pure enjoyment of the hobby. For example, music wellness rooms may contain comfortable furniture for listening to your vintage, vinyl collection or a drum set for rocking it out. A sewing wellness room may have cupboards for notions and fabrics and a big work table with multiple sewing machines at the ready. You get the idea.

And Wellness Rooms and Spaces Are Excellent Places For Expanding Your Mind
In my book, pun definitely intended, libraries are magical places. Bring a little of that magic to your home by creating a wellness room for reading, writing, researching or puzzling. Maybe you’re on the ancestor hunt, doing your own personal version of Finding Your Roots? Or maybe you’re reading Harry Potter from start to finish? Or writing your own series about a magical boy and a school for witches and wizards? Much like Field of Dreams, “If you build it (create it, set it up), it (he) will come.” If you make a room to pursue these passions, you are so much more likely to chase them and experience the wellness that comes as a result.

No Space. No Problem
Obviously, I realize that you may not have a spare room just hanging around your house waiting to become a wellness rooom. No problem. Because there are so many ways to niche out a space for wellness pursuits that don’t involve a construction crew and a bazilllion dollars. Check out my previous blog: Creating The Dual Purpose Room for some creative ways to work with what you already have.
And An Insider Tip: If you’re considering setting up a wellness room or space of your own, consignment shops like Consignments Ltd. are a great place to start. You can find furniture and lighting options, storage solutions and even the occassional yoga mat.
