The other day an article in Southern Living appeared in my feed about unexpected treasures you can find at thrift stores. Along with art, furniture and other treasures that they highlighted, they talked about finding heirlooms. It struck me funny because of what an heirloom actually is. So, it begs the question: can you find heirlooms at consignment or thrift stores?

What Exactly Is An Heirloom

Often the best place to start is to define what we’re talking about. So what exactly is an heirloom? According to the Oxford Language Dictionary an heirloom is: “a valuable object that has belonged to a family for several generations.” So, I guess, the answer is yes and no. No, you can’t find an heirloom at a thrift shop because the family, technically no longer owns the item (at least at thrift shops that have only donated items). On consignment, however, the answer is yes, well sort of. On consignment, until the item is purchased, it does still belong to the family, so you can purchase an heirloom on consignment. Too funny, right?

So What’s The Point of All This?

It’s all in what you make of it. You can find someone’s former heirlooms or current heirlooms at thrift and consignment stores, like Consignments Ltd. For whatever reason, they no longer want these treasures. And if they are valuable to you, they can become your heirlooms. That is until your kids consign or thrift them. LOL
