Thanksgiving is around the corner. Most of you are hosting or going somewhere. There will be turkey and stuffing, and all manner of sides. And don’t even get me started about the pie. Between greetings and farewells, however, you will spend time with your family, friends or both. Rather than talk about politics or religion, because we all know how well that went last year, how about trying some family games this Thanksgiving?

Guessing Contest: It’s An Easy Family Game This Thanksgiving

This is an easy family game for Thanksgiving that you can prep ahead of time and just about everyone can participate in. Here’s the how to:

  • Get a large glass container with a lid.
  • Fill it with candy, marbles, marshmallows, coins or any other small, countable object. (Count them going in so you’ve got the answer you seek).
  • Grab a small container for guesses and a few pens or pencils.
  • Cut slips of papers for guesses.
  • Decide on your rules (like they can’t pick up or shake the container, guesses that go over, like The Price Is Right, don’t count, etc. ).
  • Decide on your prize: like a stack of scratcher tickets, a Dunkin Donuts gift card, a $20 bill.
  • When guests arrive, let the fun begin.

Insider Tip: Thrift and consignment stores, like Consignments Ltd., are great resources for large glass containers (buy something you can re-purpose later). Your local dollar store or Amazon are great places to score your candy, if that’s the thing you’re counting.

A Treasure Hunt is a Great Family Game For Thanksgiving

I basically think of myself as a professional treasure hunter. I seek out merch for my store on the daily. It’s the love of the hunt for me. So many of my customers say the same. So I know that this family game will not fall short for most of you. The key is to build a sense of excitement and competition. Assign teams of two, randomly, or pair an adult with each child. Define a search area (the backyard, the living room, the upstairs bedrooms, etc.). Hide your search items beforehand (seashells, candy canes, candy kisses, painted rocks, Christmas ornaments, plastic turkeys, etc.). Set a timer and let the fun begin. The team with the most of whatever at the end of the time period is the winner. Make the prize worth fighting for (including the honor of having won the contest). Make teams wear silly hats or give teams silly names. I guarantee you that this family game will have everyone laughing for days and Thanksgivings to come.

Good, Old-Fashioned Pictionary

Pictionary, a drawing and guessing game (like charades with a twist) was so popular in the 1980’s. But this game is still out there and you can either order it here or create it yourself. You’ll need a big, old pad (or a dry erase board), some markers and a sense of humor. Divide your people into two teams. Teams take turns. Each person on the each team takes turns drawing the mystery word or movie or whatever topic you chose. Compile a bunch of drawing topics ahead of time or have a friend at your office do it so you can participate too. The others guess. Team with most correct guesses in the time allotted (usually around 3 minutes per round until all team members have gone) wins. You decide on the prizes, including “eternal glory.” LOL

And Now For A Little Music Before We Go…

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends. Marianne

And by-the-way, if you’re a first responders who is neither hosting nor going, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. XO
