I made this super-easy recipe the other nights with 8 pieces of round steak for Bruce and myself. There were no leftovers, and it wasn’t me. I’m not kidding! It was sooo good. I prepped it and then it cooked whilst we worked in the garden. Every time we went in the house for something it smelled so good. It was Fall comfort food at its finest. You’ll want to make this Swiss steak for sure.

Swiss Steak Ingredients

  • 1 1/2-2 lbs round steak
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 yellow onions, cut into 12-16 wedges each
  • 2-3 carrots, cut into 1/2″ pieces
  • 28 ounce can diced tomatoes (with juice)
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcester sauce

Directions For Swiss Steak, The Ultimate Fall Comfort Food

This Swiss steak recipe cooks entirely in a Dutch oven. If you don’t already own one, look for one at your local consignment or thrift store, like Consignments Ltd. Shops like this often have them, and they are much more reasonably priced than regular retail stores. Here’s the super-easy how-to:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Mix flour, paprika, garlic powder and pepper in a small bowl until combined. Set aside.
  • Pound steak(s) with meat tenderizing hammer until 1/2″ or so thickness. If already that thin, just give them a good whack on both sides.
  • Place flour mixture on a plate.
  • Dredge pounded steaks in mixture.
  • Pour olive oil in the bottom of the Dutch oven. Set burner to medium heat.
  • Lightly brown steaks on both sides and remove from Dutch oven.
  • Place carrots and onions in bottom of pan.
  • Place steaks on top of onions and carrots.
  • Mix Worcester sauce into beef broth and then pour the mixture over the steaks and vegetables.
  • Pour entire can of diced tomatoes over steaks (juice and all).
  • Cover and bake for 2 1/2 – 3 hours.
  • Enjoy with egg noodles or over mashed potatoes.

I hope you enjoy this Fall comfort food as much as Bruce did. If you’re hungry for more (and that un was definitely intended) check out my other recent recipes, like: Recipe For Tomato Cucumber Salad and Easy Frittata Recipe.

Have a lovely Sunday, my friends. Marianne
