It’s been cold. I mean really cold. And the heat is not functioning properly at my house. It runs and runs and gets to all of 54 degrees in my living room. Techs have been out from my local HVAC company and thus far they are stumped. Like I said, it’s cold and it’s making me grumpy. And Punxsutawney Phil isn’t making things any better. This deep freeze has me thinking about tropical Hawaiian breezes and sandy, Florida shores. But it also has me thinking about staying warm with thrift and consignment items.

Stay Warm with Thrift Items Like Throws, Blankets and Comforters
Throws, blankets and comforters can be pricey, little devils if you purchase them new. But remember to check the stock of them the next time you visit your favorite consignment or thrift store. Shops like Consignments Ltd. carry a variety of throws, blankets and comforters in good to excellent condition. You can buy relatively new, major brands as well as beautiful, vintage examples. And the best part is, you can change your look, stay warm, or both, with these thrift items, for pennies on the dollar.
Insider Tip: Even if thrift and consignment throws, blankets and comforters seem really clean, it’s never a bad idea o launder or dry clean them before use.

Hats, Scarves and Jackets Are Great Buys
When it’s been extra cold in our house, Bruce has taken to wearing a black, knit hat and fleece jacket indoors. I’ve started calling him my longshoreman husband. If I wanted him to change up this look, I could easily score a different ensemble at one of my favorite consignment or thrift shops. Prices in these shops, even for the best brands, are always at least 50% off retail, with many shops discounting further still. And now that we are at the end of the season (theoretically), prices are even better.

What I Would NOT Buy at Thrift or Consignment
However, no matter how low the temperature goes in my home, one thing I will not buy on thrift or consignment is a used space heater. No way. No how! That’s a fire waiting to happen. Some shops, including mine, will sell space heaters that are new-in-the-box. It’s the only type of space heater my insurance company will allow me to sell and it’s the only type I would ever take a chance with.
