If you collect almost anything thrifting and consignment shops can be your best friend. From bone china cups and saucers to old farm tools, consignment and thrift do not disappoint. Salt and pepper shaker collecting is no exception. These shops are a great resource for the fun, the unusual and the downright valuable. Just consider…

Why Salt and Pepper Shaker Collecting?

Collecting salt and pepper shakers is a great way to add humor and interest to your home (see my previous blog: How To Add Whimsy to Your Home). For just a few dollars you can find pieces that spark a smile or start a conversation. And much like collecting Christmas tree ornaments, salt and pepper shakers are small enough to be collected even when you’re traveling on vacation. They sure don’t take up that much room in your suitcase. lol

What To Look For

If you’re just starting to collect or even thinking about collecting you may want to set up some parameters. Perhaps you’ll collect on a theme (like travel locations, animals, Christmas or cartoon characters)? Or maybe it’s more a color thing for you? Like one shade of Depression Glass shakers? Or collect shakers from a particular time period or area of the world. Your parameters might even be just the ones that tickle your funny bone.

The Big Score in Salt and Pepper Collecting

As with everything collectible, there are always the pieces that have above average value. If that’s your thing, you may want to keep a keen eye out for these salt and pepper shakers:

  • Silver, George Jensen shakers: They’ve brought the most money of any salt and pepper shakers recently.
  • Japanese Meiji Satsuma Kutani Shakers: These sold for nearly $500 in a recent auction.
  • And Santa and Mrs. Claus in Western Wear: Worth over $100.

Whatever they are worth, if you decide to collect salt and pepper shakers just make sure to have some fun doing so. That’s the whole point anyway, isn’t it?

Insider Tip: don’t forget about displaying your finds. Thrift and consignment shops, like Consignments Ltd., are great resources for cupboards, shelving units and display cases for your new treasures.

And Now For A Little Music Before We Go…

Don’t forget to stay salty out there my friends. Marianne
