Tick tock. Tick tock. Can’t you just hear the minutes flying by until Christmas? It’s 9 days away, as a matter of fact. And this is stressing a lot of us out. It’s coming either way – whether you’re stressed or relaxed, so I’d like for us both to choose the latter. But what’s the best way to reduce holiday stress and actually enjoy yourself? Here are a few ideas…

Take Time For Yourself to Reduce Holiday Stress

I know. I know. There’s sooooo much to do. But seriously folks, take a minute. According to Peter Reisener, M.D. in a recent article on The Mayo Clinic website, you need take time for yourself. He states, “Don’t forget about your own needs. Take a nap, go for a short walk, read a book or watch a funny movie. Laughing relaxes the whole body, and can relieve physical tension and stress. Holidays are meant to be a fun, enjoyable time with friends and family. These tips can help ensure you truly enjoy your holidays when stress starts to set in.” So build in time to stay in and get cozy or go out and sing karaoke. Whatever floats your boat.

Remember What Really Counts

It’s the holidays, for goodness sake. We all put so much pressure on ourselves all through the year. The holidays are supposed to be a time for relaxing with family and friends and appreciating the reason for the season. Stress is counter to this. Do whatever it takes to remind yourself of this. Put a sign on your fridge or a wallpaper on your phone to tell yourself what really matters.

Accept That It Won’t Be Perfect

Those of you who know me will not be surprised to hear that I am slightly, ok, actually heavily, Type A. I will move a candlestick a quarter of an inch to make it “perfect.” Ask Bruce. It makes him a little crazy. But when it comes to the holidays, it’s in your best interest (and mine) to let this perfection go. Sure, you can plan ahead, and reduce some of your stress. But families and friends are messy, both physically and emotionally. Things don’t always go according to Hoyle or plan. If you can tell yourself to accept this fact it’s going to be a lot less stressful. Reduce your holiday stress by taking it as it comes in all its built in nuttiness, and your holidays will be a lot more enjoyable.

And Now For A Little Stress-Reducing Music Before We Go…

Have a lovely, stress-free holiday, my friends. Marianne
